How to Set Up a Google Business Profile for Your Gym or Studio

When someone in your town searches "gym near me" or "yoga classes near me", Google shows them a short list of local businesses on a map before anything else. If your gym or studio is not on that list, you are invisible at the exact moment a potential member is looking for you. The good news is that getting on it is free, and you can do most of it in an afternoon.

This guide walks you through setting up and optimising a Google Business Profile from scratch, written for gym owners, studio managers, and wellness practitioners who do not have a marketing team.

What a Google Business Profile Actually Is

A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that appears on the right of Google Search and as a pin on Google Maps. It shows your name, location, opening hours, photos, reviews, and a link to your website or booking page.

It matters because it is the single most important factor in whether you show up in local search. In our own analysis of what drives local rankings for fitness and wellness businesses, Google Business Profile optimisation carried by far the highest importance weight of any factor. You can read the full breakdown in our guide to the local ranking factors that actually matter.

Before you start, one eligibility note: Google Business Profiles are for businesses that have either a physical location customers visit or a defined service area where you meet clients in person. A studio, gym, or clinic qualifies easily. A purely online coaching service does not, so bear that in mind if you train clients only over video.

Step One: Create or Claim Your Profile

Go to google.com/business and sign in with the Google account you want to manage the listing from. Use a business email you will keep, not a personal one you might lose access to.

Search for your business name. One of two things will happen. If Google already has an unclaimed listing for you, perhaps auto-generated from other data, you will see it and can claim it. If nothing exists, you create a new profile. Either way, you enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signage and branding, with no added keywords. "Anytown Strength Co." is correct. "Anytown Strength Co. Gym Personal Training Classes" is not, and Google can suspend listings that stuff keywords into the name.

Step Two: Choose the Right Categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest signals you send to Google about what you are, so choose the most specific one that fits. A pilates studio should choose "Pilates studio", not the broader "Gym". A physiotherapy clinic should choose "Physiotherapist". Google offers thousands of categories, and the more precise yours is, the better you match specific searches.

Then add a few relevant additional categories for the other things you genuinely offer, for example "Personal trainer" or "Yoga studio" alongside your primary one. Do not add categories for services you do not actually provide. Google's own guidelines for representing your business are clear that categories describe what your business is, not everything you hope to rank for.

Step Three: Complete Every Field

Google rewards complete profiles, and complete profiles convert more of the people who see them. Fill in everything:

  • Your full address, or your service area if you travel to clients
  • Opening hours, including different hours for bank holidays
  • Phone number and website
  • A booking link if you use an external system
  • A short, honest description of what you do and who you help

Accuracy matters here beyond just ranking. Your name, address, and phone number should match exactly what appears on your website and other online listings. Inconsistent details confuse both customers and Google.

Step Four: Verify Your Business

Google needs to confirm you are really at the location you claim. Depending on your business, verification happens by postcard, phone, email, or video. This step can take a few days, and your profile will not appear publicly in full until it is done, so start it early. Follow the prompts Google gives you, as the available methods vary by business type and location.

Step Five: Add Photos That Show the Real Space

Profiles with genuine photos get more clicks and more visits than bare listings. Upload real images of your gym floor, your studio, a class in action, your equipment, and your team. Avoid stock photos where you can. People want to see what it actually looks like before they walk in, and fresh images also signal to Google that your profile is active and cared for.

Step Six: Start Building Reviews, and Reply to Them

Reviews are one of the biggest ranking and trust factors you have. Once you are verified, start asking happy members and clients for a Google review, and make it a steady habit rather than a one-off push. Just as importantly, reply to every review you receive, the positive ones and the difficult ones. A calm, professional reply to a critical review often reassures future customers more than the review itself worried them.

A Quick Checklist to Finish

Before you consider your profile done, confirm you have:

  • Claimed and verified the listing
  • Set the most specific primary category
  • Completed every field, with accurate name, address, and phone
  • Added at least five real photos
  • Added your booking or website link
  • Asked your first few clients for a review
  • Set a reminder to reply to reviews and refresh photos monthly

Getting Found in More Than One Place

A Google Business Profile gets you onto Google. But the people looking for a local class, trainer, or clinic are not only searching Google, and a single listing on one platform is a fragile foundation for a business.

This is exactly why we built Feelin Well. A Feelin Well listing puts your gym or studio on a map-first directory built specifically for fitness and wellness, with your classes, events, and services all in one place, so local people searching for what you offer can find and contact you directly. It reinforces the same signals Google rewards, and it gives you a second front door that does not depend on any one algorithm. You can list your business free for six months and set it up in about ten minutes.
